About the book:

Your darkest moment is your most vulnerable…

Stephen Berry is about to jump off a bridge until a suicide prevention counsellor stops him. A week later, Stephen is dead. Found at the bottom of a cliff, DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner are drafted in to investigate whether he jumped or whether he was pushed…

As they dig deeper, more would-be suicides roll in: a woman found dead in a bath; a man violently electrocuted. But these are carefully curated deaths – nothing like the impulsive suicide attempts they’ve been made out to be.

Little do Callanach and Turner know how close their perpetrator is as, across Edinburgh, a violent and psychopathic killer gains more confidence with every life he takes…

My thoughts:

Perfect Crime is book 5 in the DI Callanach series from Helen Fields. I came into the series at book 3, Perfect Death. Although I always prefer to start a series from book 1, Fields has written the series so that you can read the stories as stand alone novels - so don't be put off! The great part of starting from the beginning is watching the main characters (who we see throughout the series) develop - how they, as individuals, change and adapt to the events they've been through in the stories, as well as the relationships and bonds you see built between characters - some who you'd really like to bash their heads together and tell them to kiss already! ;)

Fields has a great talent for drawing the reader in to the tension of the investigations. The story has a great pace to it, and although you sometimes feel you have your suspicions about who is behind the murders, Fields has a tendency to lure you into a false sense of security as you realise there are a number of misleading clues and twists along the way to keep you on your toes.

I love the mix of the criminal investigation alongside the conflict within the characters' personal lives. This helps create real depth within the characters and brings another dimension to the story to keep the reader invested in the development of the character relationships within the novel.

I would definitely recommend Perfect Crime, along with the rest of the DI Callanach series, to anyone who enjoys a good thriller with lots of tension and drama.
